Undertakers work with the public in a position of trust so you can expect to be asked to take a basic DBS check if you wish to become an undertaker in the UK.

What is a basic DBS check?

A basic DBS check is a first-tier, statutory criminal record check carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service, or via Disclosure Scotland if you live in Scotland.

The Disclosure and Barring Service work on behalf of the Home Office to keep the public safe.

Under the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, DBS checks are a national procedure used to keep the public protected from those who are unsuitable for public-facing roles.

Requested during the recruitment process for all frontline roles, DBS checks result in the production of a DBS certificate detailing any information found during the search. This certificate must be shown to your employer to complete the recruitment process.

What will a basic DBS show?

A basic DBS check for an undertaker will show any unspent criminal convictions or conditional cautions. These are the only types of criminal record that will be searched for a basic DBS check.
