When you apply to work as a tram driver in the UK you will be expected to take a basic DBS check.

A basic DBS check is a statutory criminal record check conducted by the Disclosure and Barring Service for all frontline roles. If you live in Scotland, the search will be managed by Disclosure Scotland.

DBS checks are a legal requirement for every public-facing role listed in the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. The act’s purpose is to ensure the public are safeguarded from those unsuitable to work in close contact with the public.

The 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act includes an enormous number of jobs in the UK that must include a DBS check as part of their vetting process, including tram drivers.

Whilst driving trams, you will come into lots of contact with every member of society so it is important your employer ensures you are right for the role.

A DBS check for a tram driver is a basic DBS check for any criminal convictions or conditional cautions. Your DBS check will not include spent convictions and your employer has no right to require any spent convictions are disclosed.
