Working as a train driver in the UK will put you in close proximity to the public so it will be necessary for you to take a basic DBS check to qualify for employment with any UK train line.

DBS checks are statutory background checks taken during the recruitment process. They are conducted by the Disclosure and Barring Service with the purpose to keep the public safe.

Under the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, all those working in frontline roles must undergo a DBS check. The act sets out all the jobs which must use a DBS check as part of their vetting procedure. To find out more about the act, visit unlock.org.

A DBS check for a train driver will require a search for any criminal convictions or conditional cautions. Once complete, you will receive a DBS certificate which you will need to show your employer to complete the application process.

Your DBS certificate will be sent through the post and available online.

This degree of vetting is necessary to keep the public, particularly children and vulnerable adults, safe from those who are unsuitable for frontline work. Apply here.
