Sportsmen and sportswomen in the UK are expected to take a basic DBS check as part of the recruitment process.

A basic DBS check for a sportsman or sportswoman will require a search for any unspent criminal convictions or conditional cautions.

DBS checks are administered by the Disclosure and Barring Service to keep the public safe from those who are unsuitable for public-facing roles.

The 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act sets out the need for DBS checks for all frontline workers. The act introduces four types of DBS checks employers must use as part of their vetting process.

A basic DBS check for a sportsman or sportswoman is the lowest level check for those who have limited contact with the public in role.

Recruits who will have unsupervised contact with the public or work with children or vulnerable adults must take the most comprehensive type of DBS check.

Your CRB check will only include any spent convictions and your employer has no legal right to request you disclose any.
