Most sports referees, umpires and officials work with children’s sports clubs for some of the time.

Due to the regular and potentially unsupervised contact a sports referee, umpire or official can have in role, you will need to take a comprehensive DBS check to complete the recruitment process.

A DBS check for a sports referee, umpire or official is an enhanced DBS check with barred lists. This type of DBS check is a rigorous criminal record check for those who want to work with children or vulnerable adults.

Your DBS check for a sports referee, umpire or official will require a search for any unspent or spent convictions, cautions, reprimands or warnings. The DBS will also verify if there is any further non-conviction information in existence with relevant police forces or entries on the children’s and vulnerable adults barred lists.

DBS checks are a statutory measure set out in the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. You will need to complete the check to commence your new role and any offer of employment will be subject to the CRB check.

Your enhanced DBS check can only be requested by your employer. To find out more about enhanced DBS checks visit: unlock.org
