To work as a solicitor, you will need to take a standard DBS check.

DBS checks are statutory criminal record checks carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service. DBS checks were formerly known as CRB checks and have been in operation for solicitors since 1974.

The Disclosure and Barring Service exists to keep the public safe. The prominent position you will hold as a solicitor means it is necessary for you to complete a DBS check during recruitment, under the terms of the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.

The act was established to keep the public safe from those unsuitable to work in frontline roles, particularly with children and vulnerable adults.

A standard DBS check for a solicitor will involve a search for any unspent or spent convictions, cautions, reprimands or warnings in existence on the Police National Computer.
