To work as a roofer in the UK, you will need to take a basic DBS check.

What is a DBS or CRB check?

DBS checks are a formal criminal record check to verify your suitability to work in a frontline role in the UK.

Your DBS check will be carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service on behalf of the Home Office. The DBS ensure the UK public, particularly children and adults, are properly safeguarded from those who are unsuitable for public-facing roles.

What is a DBS or CRB check?

When you apply to become a roofer, your employer will want you to fill in a basic DBS application form. The form will be sent to the Disclosure and Barring Service who will carry out the check on behalf of the UK Home Office.

Once complete, you will receive a copy of your DBS certificate in the post and online. Recruitment for all frontline roles listed in the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act are subject to the completion of a DBS check.

When you receive your DBS certificate you will need to show it to your employer. If you do not complete this process, you will not be able to take up your new role.

A basic DBS check for a roofer will search for any unspent criminal convictions or conditional cautions.

In the past, a DBS check was called a CRB check so DBS checks and CRB checks are the same thing.
