When applying for a job as a railway worker you will need to take a basic DBS check.

DBS checks are administered by the Disclosure and Barring service. If you live in Scotland, your check will be managed by Disclosure Scotland.

A basic DBS check for a railway worker will involve a search for any unspent criminal convictions or conditional cautions.

There are four types of DBS checks, a basic DBS is the lowest type. DBS checks are carried out on behalf of the Home Office and exist to ensure the public are safeguarded from those unsuitable for frontline work.

The need for this level of vetting is a result of the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act which stipulates all the roles which must undergo a DBS check in the UK.

A DBS check for a railway worker will involve no more than a search for unspent criminal convictions and conditional cautions. There are no legal grounds for your employer to ask for the disclosure of anything more.
