Prison officers hold a position of significant authority so you will need to undergo a security clearance check to verify your suitability for the position.

Your check will be carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service under the terms set out in the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders act. The DBS has a remit to keep the public, particularly children and vulnerable adults, safe from those who are not right for frontline work.

A security clearance check for a prison officer will require a search for any unspent or spent convictions, cautions, reprimands or warnings in existence on the Police National Computer.

The DBS work on behalf of the Home Office and your recruitment to the position of a prison officer will be subject to the security clearance check.
