To become a postman or postwoman, you will need to take a statutory criminal record check called a DBS check.

DBS checks are carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service. The Disclosure and Barring Service are a public body sponsored by the Home Office.

The DBS has a remit to safeguard the public, particularly children and vulnerable adults.

There are four types of DBS checks in operation for UK recruits:

  • Basic DBS
  • Standard DBS
  • Enhanced DBS
  • Enhanced DBS with barring lists

A DBS check for a postman/ postwoman is a basic DBS check which will involve a search for any unspent criminal convictions or conditional cautions.

DBS checks are part of the vetting process for a wide variety of frontline roles in the UK. The 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act sets out the need for these checks and the type of check each position requires.

Your DBS check for a postman/ postwoman will be requested during recruitment, Once the DBS check is complete, you will need to show your DBS certificate to your employer.
