To apply for a role as a police constable you will need to take a security clearance check carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

A security clearance check for a police constable will require a search for any unspent or spent convictions, cautions, reprimands or warnings in existence on the Police National Computer.

The check is necessary to keep the public, particularly vulnerable adults and children, safe from those who are unsuitable for frontline work.

Under the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act all those who work in frontline roles must undergo a statutory check by the DBS. The DBS are a public body operating on behalf of the Home Office.
