Personnel recruits in the UK are required to take a statutory criminal record check called a DBS check.

DBS checks exist to safeguard the public from those who are unsuitable for frontline work. Under the terms of the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act there are a vast range of frontline roles that must include a DBS check as part of the vetting procedure for recruits.

There are four types of DBS checks in operation in the UK. The lowest level check is reserved for those who have limited engagement with children and vulnerable adults when carrying out their role, whilst those who engage in close contact are subject the most robust search.

The four types of DBS checks are:

  • Basic DBS
  • Standard DBS
  • Enhanced DBS
  • Enhanced DBS with barring lists

A basic DBS check for personnel is a low level DBS check which will cover any unspent criminal convictions or conditional cautions. This type of CRB check does not include spent convictions.

Your employer will use your DBS check to verify your suitability to work in personnel and you will need to take the check to complete the recruitment process.

Your basic DBS check for personnel can be requested by you or your employer.
