To work as a paralegal in the UK you will need to take a statutory criminal record check called a DBS check.

There are four types of DBS checks in operation in the UK. Each type requires a different degree of search depending on the level of engagement with the public you will have in role, particularly children and vulnerable adults.

The purpose of DBS checks is to keep the public protected from those who may be unsuitable for frontline work.

The four types of DBS checks are:

  • Basic DBS
  • Standard DBS
  • Enhanced DBS
  • Enhanced DBS with barring list

The 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act details a wide range of public-facing roles which must undergo a DBS check. The act stipulates which type of DBS check is needed for each public-facing role.

A DBS check for a paralegal is a basic DBS check.

This is a low level search that will cover any unspent criminal convictions or conditional cautions. A DBS check for a paralegal will not involve any spent convictions.
