DBS checks are statutory criminal checks carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service on behalf of the Home Office. As a civil servant you will work in an influential role with limited contact with the public so a basic DBS check for a Ministry of Defence employee should be sufficient.
However, if you work in a position which requires security clearance, your vetting process will include a search of the Police National Computer.

In the UK, statutory checks are necessary for any role which involves a level of engagement with the public or work of an advisory nature. The closer and more unsupervised your interactions with the public, the stronger the level of DBS check required.
As a civil servant your direct work with the public will be limited so you can expect to undergo a basic DBS check.
What is a basic DBS check?
Under the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, all those working in public-facing roles in the UK are subject to one of four types of DBS checks. Each of the four CRB checks involves a different depth of search.
The act stipulates which search is required for each frontline role included in the legislation. These measures were established to provide a safeguarding standard for employers in the UK to ensure the public remain securely protected from those who are unsuitable for frontline roles.
A basic DBS check for an employee of the Ministry of Defence not working in a sensitive role will require a search for any unspent criminal convictions or conditional cautions.
