Did you know UK farmers are subject to a basic DBS check?

A basic DBS check is a formal criminal records search to confirm suitability for a role. DBS checks are necessary for all positions in the UK which involve a degree of interaction or influence with the public.

The requirement for DBS checks for farmers in the UK was set out in the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. The act stipulates all the public-facing roles which must undergo DBS checks and the level of CRB check that must be given.

A DBS check for a farmer is a basic DBS check. These statutory checks are necessary to keep the public, particularly children and vulnerable adults safe. All checks are carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service, a public body sponsored by the Home Office.

This type of DBS check can be requested by your employer or yourself. It is a basic check and will not include spent convictions. Instead a DBS check for a farmer will see if you have any unspent criminal convictions or conditional cautions.

Any unspent criminal convictions or conditional cautions found will be listed on your DBS certificate. If you have no criminal records, the fields on your DBS certificate will be left blank.

Your DBS certificate can be used to verify your suitability to work as a farmer whenever required. The certificate will sent by post and available online.
