You may be surprised to discover electricians in the UK have a duty to undertake a DBS check.

DBS checks are statutory criminal record checks carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service. Their purpose is to safeguard the public, particularly children and vulnerable adults, by ensuring those applying for frontline roles are suitable.

There are four levels of DBS checks, which vary according to the degree of interaction with the public, in particular children and vulnerable adults, your work will involve.

The four types of DBS checks are:

  • Basic DBS
  • Standard DBS
  • Enhanced DBS
  • Enhanced DBS with barring list

UK electricians need a basic DBS check.

A basic DBS check for an electrician will require a formal search for any unspent criminal convictions or conditional cautions. ...More about basic checks

All those in frontline roles in the UK have a duty to undergo a DBS check according to the measures set out in the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. The act lists all the jobs which must involve a DBS check as part of their vetting procedures and the level of CRB check required.

Your role as an electrician won’t bring you into unsupervised contact with children or vulnerable adults so you won’t need a higher level DBS check which includes spent convictions.

However, during your work as an electrician you will have close contact with the public throughout the day, often in unsupervised contexts so a basic DBS check is necessary.

Unlike other DBS checks, a basic DBS can be requested by you or your employer.
