If you wish to work as a draughtsman in the UK you will need to undertake a DBS check. DBS checks are carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service.

There are currently four levels of DBS checks in operation in the UK and their purpose is to safeguard the public, particularly children and vulnerable adults.

You will need a basic DBS check for a draughtsman. Basic DBS checks are the lowest level of background check and require a search for any unspent criminal convictions or conditional cautions.

All DBS checks are statutory vetting processes set out in the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.

The act details the level of check necessary for each role included and employers have a legal obligation to abide by these rules. All roles included in the act are jobs which involve a degree of engagement with the public.

As a draughtsman creating technical drawings for architects, engineers and more, you will have a level of interaction with the public and operate in a role of influence, so you will be subject to a basic DBS check.

For a basic CRB check you will not be asked to disclose any spent convictions. Spent convictions are past convictions that have “expired”.

Once the given rehabilitation period for a sentence has passed, the conviction is classed as a spent conviction. If the rehabilitation period is still current, the conviction is unspent. The more severe the offence, the longer the rehabilitation period.

Terms for spent and unspent convictions were also set out in the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.
