As regulated healthcare professionals who come into close contact with the public, particularly children and vulnerable adults, dentists, hygienists and auxillaries can expect to take an enhanced DBS check with barred lists.

DBS checks are carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service and used to verify your suitability for the role. There are four types of DBS check in operation across the UK. Those who work in closest contact with children and vulnerable adults are subject to the highest level check which is an enhanced DBS with barred lists.

Your DBS check for a dentist, hygienist or auxillary will be the enhanced DBS with barred lists because of the level of engagement you will have with children and vulnerable adults in role.

The CRB check will involve a search for any unspent or spent convictions, cautions, reprimands or warnings. The DBS will also check if there is any further non-conviction information in existence with relevant police forces or entries on the children’s and vulnerable adults barred lists.

The 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act sets out the need for dentists, hygienists and auxillaries to undergo a standard DBS check.

As a regulated healthcare professional, you have a duty to declare any convictions. Further, the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the General Dental Council (GDC) both operate within these statutory requirements and you will have duties to disclose information when you register for both bodies.
