Childminders work in close proximity to children all day so it will come as no surprise that a robust form of background check is necessary for all childminders in the UK.

Childminders are subject to an enhanced DBS check with barring lists to evidence their suitability to care for children and babies. This comprehensive background check will be administered by the Disclosure and Barring service and is the highest level of CRB check available.

The purpose of DBS checks are to ensure children, vulnerable adults and the general public are properly safeguarded. All roles which involve close contact with children or vulnerable adults require an enhanced DBS check.

An enhanced DBS check with barred lists for a childminder will involve a full search for any unspent or spent convictions, cautions, reprimands or warnings. The DBS will also check whether there is any other non-conviction information in existence with relevant police forces and if there are any entries in the children’s and/ or the vulnerable adults barred lists.

Any results found during the search will be displayed on the DBS certificate. If no records are found, the DBS certificate will be blank.

Unlike basic DBS checks, enhanced DBS checks can only be requested by employers. To find out more about enhanced DBS checks for childminders or childcare providers visit the Disclosure and Barring Service today or browse our home page.
