The close contact involved in the work of a carer means you will be subject to a statutory background check.

Carried out by the Disclosure and Barring service, DBS checks are intended to keep children, vulnerable adults and the general public safe. They are necessary for a wide range of roles and involve a search for criminal records.

A DBS check for a carer will be an enhanced DBS check with barred lists. This type of CRB check is a comprehensive search for all types of criminal records due to the level of unsupervised contact you will have with the public, particularly vulnerable adults, in role.

What is an enhanced DBS check with barred lists?

An enhanced DBS check with barred lists will search for any unspent or spent convictions, cautions, reprimands or warnings. It will also verify whether there is any other non-conviction information in existence with relevant police forces and if there are any entries in the children’s and/ or the vulnerable adults barred lists.

All workers who work in contexts where they will have close contacts with children and/ or vulnerable adults barred lists are also subject to the same level of vetting.
