Bus and coach drivers in the UK are expected to undergo a basic DBS check to confirm their suitability for the role. A basic DBS check for a bus or coach driver will require a search for any unspent criminal convictions or conditional cautions. Learn more about basic DBS checks.

This may sound surprising but under the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, there are many other employers of staff in public-facing roles in the UK who are legally required to vet their staff in this way.

The CRB check will only look at unspent convictions or conditional cautions, your employer has no legal right to demand anything more, unless you are going to be driving a school bus or coach.

Bus and coach drivers who drive school buses are required to have an enhanced DBS check. Enhanced checks include a search for spent convictions, reprimands, warnings, non-conviction information and entries on the children’s and/ or vulnerable adults barred list.
