To work as a builder or contractor in the UK, you will need to undergo a basic DBS check.
A basic DBS check for a builder or contractor involves a search by the Disclosure and Barring Service to see whether you have any unspent criminal convictions or conditional cautions. ...more

This level of vetting is a statutory requirement which came into effect in 1974 to ensure the public, particularly children and vulnerable adults, are properly safeguarded.

Under the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act there are lots of other frontline jobs which also require CRB checks, although they may involve a higher level of clearance than that which is required for a basic DBS check.

A basic check for a builder or contractor is only a first tier background check. However, if you find yourself involved in a project which takes place on school premises, you may also be asked to take a more extensive enhanced DBS check because there is a chance you could end up in an environment where you have unsupervised contact with children.

An enhanced DBS check will also search for spent convictions, reprimands, warnings and non-conviction information held by relevant police forces. It could also include a review of the children’s and/ or the vulnerable adults barred lists.

Unless you are working in a school environment, your basic DBS check will be sufficient. Talk to us today on 0333 030 0446, about how we can help you to complete your basic DBS check or find out more about basic DBS checks on our home page now
