Actors working in a production that includes children will need to complete a basic DBS check to ensure the safety of vulnerable adults and children within the cast. Although children working on productions are chaperoned, the basic DBS check for actors adds an additional layer of security necessary to ensure children are kept safe within the production environment.
If you have offences committed under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, you will not be able to work in a production with children.
Enhanced DBS checks for actors
If you already have an enhanced DBS check from other projects or an enhanced DBS check registered on the DBS update service this is likely to be sufficient – check with your employer.
If you are an actor who is also directing the production you may need an enhanced DBS check to cover occasions when you may be with children in unsupervised contexts.
An enhanced CRB check will involve a search for any unspent or spent convictions, cautions, reprimands or warnings, as well further non-conviction information from relevant police forces.
Additionally an enhanced DBS check for an actor who is directing could also include checks against the children’s barred list and/ or the vulnerable adults barred list.

These DBS safeguarding measures for actors have been in place since 1st of January 2016 and apply to all those working in the TV and film industry. The basic DBS check is the result of a joint partnership between the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and the Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television (PACT).
